Age is Just a Number in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

At age 93, some may think that spine surgery is no longer in the cards.  We say, age is just a number.  Irene Scheck is 93 years young, full of life and ready to tackle the rest of her years head on. As summer was nearing an end, Ms. Scheck’s outlook on life was tested when the sciatic pain she had tolerated for years progressed into what she calls, “the worst pain I ever experienced.”  Her normal aches and pains became a distant memory, as this new pain down her legs had her virtually bed ridden.  She could barely walk, and could no longer enjoy her normal activities.

Luckily for Ms. Scheck, her son urged her to call our office.  She scheduled an appointment with Dr. Jonathan Citow and sent her MRI in for a complimentary review. Within a few days, Ms. Scheck received a call from Dr. Citow to discuss her MRI, which showed a synovial cyst causing severe narrowing of the spinal canal and the foramen – essentially the cyst was pushing on the nerves in the spine, causing her excruciating pain and weakness in her legs.  She came in for a full consultation shortly after and Dr. Citow recommended a minimally invasive outpatient foraminotomy and hemilaminotomy with removal of the synovial cyst and decompression of the nerve and the spinal cord.

Just one week later, Ms. Scheck reported to Advocate Condell Medical Center for her surgery.  In 30 minutes, Dr. Citow had completed the surgery and removed the synovial cyst which was actually wrapped around the nerves.  The procedure was performed through a tiny incision, approximately 3/4-inch long.  Ms. Scheck was discharged and returned home the same day.  She made a full recovery and returned to her normal activities within a few weeks and was able to prepare for her snowbird adventure free of the debilitating leg pain and able to walk without assistance.

When asked how she felt about her experience with ACSN, Ms. Scheck said, “I had to have the surgery and Dr. Citow did exactly what he said he would do. The sciatica is gone and I will recommend him to everyone I know.”
